What the numbers assume
Cruise speeds are typical for each category, from about 290 knots for a turboprop to about 488 knots for an ultra-long-range jet. Every leg gets a flat 25 minutes for taxi, climb and descent. If a leg is longer than about 85% of the category’s typical range, the calculator adds a 45-minute fuel stop.
The low price uses still-air time at the bottom of the hourly range. The high price adds 3% for routing plus up to 12% more on westbound tracks, where winter jet-stream headwinds slow aircraft down, and uses the top of the hourly range. The full method is on How it calculates.
